happy familyMusty or polluted air in your home can have a detrimental impact on your health. Poor indoor air quality has been linked to lung disease, asthma and even fatigue. Here are some ways to improve the air quality inside your home.

Ventilate

You need to have fresh air going through your home to have good air quality. A simple option is to open some doors or windows. If you live in a city, though, you might be letting in potentially toxic air.

You could also turn on exhaust fans in your bathrooms and kitchen to spot ventilate your home. You should have the bathroom fan on for an hour after showering anyway. This will remove moisture and prevent mold from growing.

Clean Carpets and Rugs Regularly

Carpets and rugs act as filters by trapping dust and other particles. You should vacuum them at least once a week to keep them clean and retain their ability to act as a filter.

Buy Better Furniture

Cheap furniture uses toxic glues, varnishes, lacquers and other products that release harmful chemicals. You should buy quality furniture and check with the manufacturer about what products they use.

Buy Better Paint

If you notice that you feel faint or dizzy when painting a room, you likely bought paint that has volatile organic compounds (VOCs). You can buy “Zero VOC” and “Low VOC” paint that doesn’t emit harmful chemicals.

Use Natural Cleaners

Most household cleaners you buy at the grocery store usually contain toxins and harsh chemicals. You can clean your home using natural cleaners like vinegar, lemon and baking soda instead. If you do buy household cleaners, at least buy ones that are fragrance-free.
