Your air conditioner is vital during Coral Spring summers, and a clogged AC drain line can make your home go from comfortable to sweltering pretty fast. Excess condensation water can back up in the line and flood your home, on top of the unit not working. Because this equipment is essential to your comfort, it is advisable to deal with a clogged AC drain pipe right away.
Isolating the Problem
You’ll first need to locate your drain line. For a free-standing family residence, it will usually be found outside near the condenser unit. If you own a condominium in a building, the drain will be in the same closet as the HVAC equipment. Look for a PVC pipe with a plastic cap. Once you’ve found it, remove the cap.
Use a Plunger
A plunger is the usual homeowner response to clogs, and while sometimes it can help, it might not always be effective for different types of blockages. But it’s still a good idea for an initial attempt at fixing the problem.
Use a Vacuum to Suck Out Debris
One of the easiest ways to unclog the drain is to use a wet/dry vacuum to suck the debris. Turn on the vacuum for a minute or two to clear the drain. If this doesn’t work, you may have mineral or organic buildup in your condensate line. Use the steps below to help clear this issue.
Use Vinegar to Clean the Drain Line
Using a vacuum to unclog the drain is not a long-term solution because it might leave some obstruction in the line. The long-term fix is to clean the clogged condensate line. For this, you will need hot water, vinegar, and a funnel. After assembling these tools and before cleaning the drain, power off your air conditioner to avoid electrical damage or shock.
Pour one cup of vinegar mixed with one cup of hot water down the drain line. To keep from making a mess, use the funnel. Wait about an hour to see if this clears the clog. If not, use the vacuum to suck out the combined liquid and try again with heated vinegar undiluted by the water. If this still does not work, make sure you have vacuumed out what you can and call a professional.
