You depend on the central air conditioning system in your Coral Springs, FL, home to keep you cool and comfortable during the sizzling summer months of the year. An important part of maintaining indoor comfort is cleaning your air conditioner’s reusable filter. Follow these three tips to successfully clean your AC’s filter every month.
1. Locate and Remove
Begin by turning off the power to the air conditioner. The system needs to be off while you clean the air filter. Locate the air conditioner’s filter. It’s usually in the indoor air handler unit. Some air handlers have separate housing for the filter. You might need a screwdriver to open the door of the housing. Once you open the housing door, slide the filter out of its slot.
2. Sanitize and Scrub
Fill a bathtub or large basin with several inches of cold water. Add a few drops of biodegradable dish soap. Gently scrub the filter with an old, soft-bristled toothbrush. Rinse the filter. Make a solution of 50% white vinegar, and soak the filter in it for one to four hours. This kills any mold, bacteria, pollen, dust mites or other biological materials on the filter.
3. Dry and Reinsert
Remove the filter from the vinegar soak. Place it flat on an old towel, and allow it to dry. After a few hours, flip the filter over so that both sides can dry evenly. When the filter is dry, insert it back into the housing in the correct orientation.
